How much does it cost to develop an IoT product?

What IoT product development really costs in 2026: the cost drivers, typical project shapes, where budgets blow up, and how to get a fixed quote before committing.

IoT product development costs vary enormously with complexity: a simple sensor device built on proven modules sits at the low end, while a certified medical or industrial product with custom hardware, custom firmware and compliance testing is a six-figure engineering programme. The honest answer is that cost is a function of scope — which is why serious consultancies quote against a written specification, not a phone call.

Why is there no single price?

Two products that look similar on a pitch deck can differ in cost by 10× once engineered. The drivers are always the same: how much of the design is custom versus off-the-shelf, how harsh the operating environment is, what certifications the market demands (CE, UKCA, FCC, medical or ATEX approvals), how aggressive the power budget is, and how many units you plan to manufacture. A Bluetooth sensor built around a proven module with standard firmware is a fundamentally different project from a battery-powered medical wearable that must survive regulatory audit.

What are the main cost components?

  • Requirements & feasibility — turning the idea into an engineering specification. Small as a share of budget, but it de-risks everything after it.
  • Electronics design — schematic, component selection, PCB layout, prototype rounds. Each additional prototype spin adds board fabrication, assembly and engineering time.
  • Firmware development — usually the largest single line for connected products: drivers, connectivity (BLE, Wi-Fi), power management, testing and field-update mechanisms.
  • Compliance & certification — EMC testing, radio certification and any sector-specific approvals. Budget for at least one failed-and-fixed test cycle on a first product.
  • Manufacturing setup — design-for-manufacture work, test jigs, documentation packs and first-run support.

Where do budgets actually blow up?

Rarely on the visible engineering. Budgets die on unplanned prototype spins caused by rushed early decisions, on components that go end-of-life mid-project, on EMC failures discovered at the certification lab rather than in design review, and on the last 10% — the field bugs, the edge cases, the production-line test process. Experienced teams price these realities in from the start; inexperienced ones discover them with your money.
